Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday - 1929

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on this day in 1929. Following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps, he was ordained as a minister in 1948. Dr. King became one of the most important leaders of the civil rights movement in the U.S., advocating a nonviolent approach to fighting for equal rights. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.

Speaking of heroes, I consider Dr. King a hero for showing such bravery in standing up for his beliefs. He tried to make the world a better place for everyone. It is so strange for me to think that he was my age when he was assassinated. Still, he accomplished so much in his life. He would be 79 years old today. Just think what else he could have done.

Good question, Katie. It's hard to say whether MLK would be president today (remember, he'd be 77 years old), but I'm pretty sure Barack Obama wouldn't have a real chance to be elected president if it weren't for Dr. King's accomplishments.
