Loyalist or Patriot???
By: Madeline Kent (Cara S.)

Hello, my name is Madeline Kent, I’m fourteen years of age and a patriot through and through. For this there are three reasons, the first is that I always hear my parents say ‘no taxation without representation.” I asked my father what the meaning of the phrase was, and he replied “the parliament taxes us, but we have no one from the colonies in parliament to say our side.” Well I’ve been brought up to be just, and the parliament is just the opposite.

Secondly, because we are the printers, the tax on paper nearly left us without money. Even after the tax was lifted, we hardly had any money left for our daily needs. For some time we relied on our Uncle John for support. Although we don’t have a life like we did in England, if something happened with the Sons of Liberty, father would be able to get that business because he’s a patriot.

Lastly, because of all the taxes they’ve placed on us the town has run low on money, paper, glass, tea, and patience. All these taxes have been bad, but the Boston Shooting was the worst. People were killed, injured, or made even madder. All in all, the British have been rude, ungrateful, and ignorant. They have not done a good job ruling the colonies, and it’s time we try it ourselves!!!

My name is Alison Smith. I am the 12 year old daughter of the silversmiths. My Nanna, brother, and sister are all loyalists. Both my parents are patriots, and my father took place in the Boston Tea Party. As for me, I am a loyalist.
The first reason I am a loyalist is I was brought up to be one. My Nanna, Lucille, has always told us that she was a loyalist. Nanna also says that loyalists are stronger than patriots. The second reason that I am a loyalist id that I would rather obey the laws than break them. My father once got in trouble for breaking one of King George’s laws, and I would rather not get in trouble with King George. The third and final reason that I am a loyalist is that I am proud to be one. I agree with most of King George’s laws. Also, I feel great sympathy for people who cannot earn enough money to come over to Boston.
I also don’t like that people threw the tea off of the ships and into the water. The Boston Tea Party was not necessary, and we can handle our problems in a better way, but I am glad they did not use violence because violence is never the answer. These are the reasons that I, Alison Smith, am a loyalist.

Loyalist or patriot
By: Dominic F.

My name is Samuel Patriot and I am 13 years of age my father is Frankfort the Third and I am apprenticed to a nearby printer. I visited Britain when I was eleven and I stayed with my aunt and uncle. I am a patriot and I have been for most of my life. We can govern ourselves and we don’t need the soldiers here. The Boston shooting was when the soldiers shot and the colonists were unhappy because the soldiers were here.
We also have no say on the taxes. The stamp act put a tax on anything printed and many printed things are important to us. The quartering act forced us to quarter soldiers. The Townsend Act puts taxes on many items that we use in our business. The Tea Act puts a tax on tea, something we use almost every day.
The taxes also affect our business. The tax on lead, an essential to blacksmithing, means we have to put up higher prices on our wares ending up with fewer people buying our wares. From being patriots, our family will benefit from not having to pay the taxes, having our family feel safer and getting more business. That is why I am a patriot.

Are You a Loyalist or a Patriot?
By: Rosie Dre also known as Jaime S.

I’m Rosie Dre and I’m 5 years old. I’m a patriot for so many important reasons and you will find them out in what I’m about to say.

Patriots should be able to be free. None of these events would have happened of the soldiers didn’t come. They wouldn’t even be patriots of the soldiers didn’t come because the King wouldn’t be making these taxes and nobody would be a loyalist or a patriot, we would be able to be our own person. If the loyalists support King George III then why don’t they go back to England and live there. We are just as important as the loyalist and should be treated equally.

These events have impacted our family in so many ways. One way it has impacted our family is that my grandfather, father, and my brother, James, are all loyalists while my mother, Auntie Sarah, and me are all patriots and baby Roseanne doesn’t know what she is yet because she is a baby. Another way is that we have to split up, so the patriots get the top half of the house and the loyalists get the bottom half of the house. The last way that this has impacted our family is because we fight so much and I want to play with James, but I can’t because we are against each other. My mother and father, Auntie Sarah, grandfather, James, baby Roseanne, and I will never get along until the taxes and the soldiers leave. Those are the ways that this has impacted our family.

These are the reasons that I am a patriot and why everybody else should be a patriot and not support the King. I feel that these reasons will help more people realize that people should not be loyalists and should be patriots!

Individual Position

My name is Lizzi. I am 15 years old. I am part of the Henderson’s family. I am a child in my family. I have 4 siblings. I am the second oldest in my family.
My mother supports the loyalist, so she is a loyalist, but my father supports the patriot side, so he is a patriot. First I did not know which side to support, but now I know. I decided to be a loyalist. The first reason why I support the loyalist side is that I felt really horrible what the patriots did to Tomas Hodgenson’s house. The second reason why I support the loyalist side was the tea act. I did not think it was a big deal. I did not care if my mother and I had to pay taxes. The last reason why I support the loyalist side is because of the tea party. I DID NOT like what the patriots did to the tea.
These events impacted my family a lot. First of all my mother is a loyalist and my father is a patriot and I am a loyalist, so we are not a good family anymore. The last reason how these events impacted my family is that my mother and I get more money than my father.

Hello my name is James Dre and I am 10 years old. I am a loyalist because I don’t want to get in trouble with my Daddy. Daddy always says “you always respect the king, because he brought us here’’.

Well the king is fair but his laws aren’t. in the quartering act we had to take in British soldiers that was bad, but at least we did not have to do everything that the soldiers what they just eat and stay. We have enough money for that, which was the good. I hope I convinced to be a loyalist. Further questions ask my daddy.

Sincerely, James Dre also known as Jack P

My name is Joe Grocer. I am a 42 year old apprentice. I'm a patriot because the Parliament has been raising taxes for everything without representation. I was worried when the Quartering Act happened because even though we have a big house, we have 10 people and we probably wouldn’t have had enough room for the soldiers. I think it was very unjust for them to do such a thing. Although there is an only tax on tea now, it is also without representation. I like tea very much, but do not buy it because it’s British tea and it has taxes without representation.

Hi I am Jackson Dre and am 32 years old I am a doctor and live in Boston. I am a loyalist because I do what the king says. I like the soldiers but now the Boston Massacre just happened so now the soldiers hate us and the patriot hates the soldiers. Another reason I am a loyalist is that I still want to be part of Britain even though l am in a different place in the world and will always obey King Goerge.

American Revolutionary War
Individual Statement
By: Sophie

I remain and stand as a patriot. I am a grocer named Eliza Grocer. My family members are 2 grandparents, 1 aunt, an apprentice, a father, a dog and 3 children. I believe that the British have no right to order us around.

One reason I am a patriot is because the British are putting taxes on items we need for our lives. The Sugar act, Stamp act, Quartering act and the Townshend act have affected my family greatly. We have to do extra work at the house, and the soldiers are a real annoyance. Because of the soldiers we are suffering and the British stuff themselves up and make you work. The soldiers partly caused the Boston Massacre by getting us angry which ended up being the Boston Massacre. The taxes are outrageous, and we have to work extra hard for it. Even the dog has to help the family. The kids can’t get much education and even the loyalists are suffering.

Another reason I am against King George’s law is that I get to have many people on my side, and we can express how we feel nonviolently. For instance the Boston Tea Party, it was a way to show that we feel angry nonviolently. King George has to understand that we are capable of taking care of ourselves if the Parliament doesn’t let us have a say in our laws. Personally I think he’s too young to be a king. I have my advantages of being a patriot. Some advantages are expressing my feelings, standing up for what I believe in, and showing that people who think laws are unjust can fight for it. But as always there are many disadvantages too. We are taking a risk by joining in mobs and groups of patriots. For example the mob at Governor Hutchinson’s house. They could have gotten into serious trouble. But I will not stop being a patriot because I will not die as a believer that King George III is an unfair king.

My final reason for believing that King George is unjust is that my family can learn to be responsible and smart even at hard times. My family is one of the largest in Boston, and only one of them has gone to be a loyalist, my husband. My family will learn from our decisions and beliefs. We are showing that us, citizens of the colonies have a right to speak for themselves.

I hope that I have taken you to a side you want to stand on, for what is life without learning to make your own decisions. So that is why I am a fellow Bostonian patriot.

Loyalist or Patriot?

I am a 15 year old boy with one sister. I help Maxwell print newspaper and sell. I support the loyalist side because I agree with what they are doing. The loyalists wanted a peaceful solution to the problem with King George rather than fighting a war.
The loyalists wanted to pay more taxes. The loyalists also were giving up their homes that they owned for years just to have peace.
This affected my family because our printing company printed the only thing that people had to communicate with so we had to continue to give people their newspapers so they could find out what was going on.

Loyalist or Patriot?
By: Christine M.

I’m Pam, I’m 30, and I’m a patriot. I know that by the time you finish reading this, you will have changed your opinion. I am only one out of nine people living in my house and we are all outraged by the new laws. Our family runs a Grocer/Fabrics store, which I help out with. I am here to tell you about all of the unfairness going on in the colonies. The Tea Act was hard for my family because ewe were chosen to sell British tea but refused, so we sell smuggled tea instead. We refused to sell British tea because we think the tax is unfair and the colonists shouldn’t have to pay for it. We could’ve made a lot of money but we continue to remain loyal to our fellow patriots. Also we saw what they did to Thomas Hutchinson’s house because of the unfair laws and we certainly don’t want that to happen to ours. It impacted out family because we had to stop drinking the tea also known as boycotting which we love.

The next unfair act is the Quartering Act, forcing us to house, clothe, and feed British soldiers. If we don’t the penalty is death. A soldier comes knocking on our door and we have to give him hot food, a warm house, and clean clothes. This has impacted our family because we have spent tons of money on food and we have to house them, and with ten other people that isn’t easy! We will benefit from supporting the patriots because if we refuse to house the soldiers and do something about this act, maybe it will be withdrawn. Then we would have benefited greatly. Another act is the Stamp Act. This act causes people to buy stamps for every item purchased from England. This is unfair because we have to buy all of our food and fabrics from Britain, the same as everyone in the colonies. Most everyone in Boston purchases goods from Britain and now stores are closing because they are unable to pay for the stamps. We benefit from being patriots because we wrote protests about it and the act was changed. If we were loyalists we would still be paying for the stamps.

Now I’m going to tell you about some big events that have taken place in Boston. One event is the Boston Massacre. Colonists were provoking British soldiers and one colonist threw a stick. The soldiers started firing and many colonists were killed. The colonists and soldiers had both been roughing each other up. Then one day the colonists couldn’t take it anymore, and they became a mob. The soldiers were also angry and started firing. As a result, the Boston Massacre. This impacted out family because we don’t let the kids outside anymore. Grandpa George sits at the door of our store and when a soldier walks by he switches the open sign to closed. Also people are too scared to go outside, so now we have fewer customers. Our family has benefited because now the soldiers know they can’t just boss us around anymore. The next event is the Boston Tea Party. It took place because of the Tea Act. The Sons of Liberty dressed up as Mohawk Indians, raided the ships, and threw the tea into the harbor. The Tea Act made us so outraged that we had to take action. I am proud to inform you that nothing but tea was thrown into the harbor. It impacted our family because our hardwork and planning paid off. We as patriots benefited from this because after this event the Tea Act was changed. I hope you will see all of the unfairness that has taken place in the colonies, and I hope I changed your opinion about these topics.

Hi, my name is Maxwell Kent and I’m 42 years old, and a patriot.

I am a patriot because I don’t like paying more then I have to, I can’t even buy tea for my family(everybody in our family likes tea) because I’m making so little money. I’m also a patriot because I’m mad about King George’s taxes and rules. The quartering act is horrible, this British soldier just walks into our house and eats all of our food while were working as hard as we can at the printing shop, selling and making newspaper. It’s infuriating having him around. King George please ban the tea tax and quartering act.

I will never obey King George’s taxes and acts, and I will try so hard to get them banned, so that’s why I am a true Patriot.

I am Frankfort the third and I am forty years of age and I am going to tell you way I am a patriot. One reason is all the rules that parliament makes we don’t even have an option on them like the quartering act, sugar act and the one that pushed us to faire and lead into the Boston massacre the tea act!!! They just went to fair that time ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!! Another reason is taxes there raising taxes to high and going to fair and me and my family cant pay for it and because they just tax because they lost all there money on the war witch makes me mad that we have to pay an outrĂ© home lenders don’t. Now after all of this I tank there will be a war.

Signed frank fort the third.

I am Sarah Dre. I am 40 years old and I am a PATRIOT! I live with my daughter, niece, my two nephews, brother-in-law, and my very dear sister Rose. I’m the Aunt. I am a patriot with my niece Rosie. Jackson (brother-in-law) and James (nephew) are the loyalist in the family.
I am a patriot because I LOVE TEA! When they put the taxes on tea I was devastated. But when the Boston Tea Party happened I was excited. Another reason that I am patriot is I could not stand when the Quartering Act passed because we need a house to live in and we can not see it go to the “Red Coats”. My last reason is that with the tax laws passing my family can not afford to buy different kinds of things.

Loyalist or Patriot
By: Will H

I Fredrick M. Jones am a full fledged patriot. I am 21 years of age. I live in Boston. These are my views. One point of view for being a patriot is that nine years prier to this date of 1773, the quartering act was passed. This affected us for we were forced to provide food and board to the British soldiers. Also my family must deal with the soldiers torments, and with their mistreatment. My third reason for being a patriot is that I believe that all people should have equal treatment. That is why I I am a patriot

My Personal Statement

I stand as a thru and thru true patriot! I have made this decision with my heart and brain. Although my father Frankfort is unsure of his side as far as I know, me and the rest of my family, my mother Janet and my brother Samuel have decided to all become true patriots.

Sophia M.

Bostonians have been forced to pay “taxation without representation”, we have had our liberty and rights taken away. We have been forced to house soldiers on our PRIVATE PROPERTY, in our own homes. Bostonians have had to put up with this for to long! These “acts” are simply brutal taxes that have one by one taken our rights away! The Sugar Act forced us to pay taxes for molasses, and allowed custom officials to enter our home and STEAL molasses! Well if that wasn’t enough what about the Stamp Act! it forced us to pay taxes on paper and ink! But did we have a say in the matter? NO! Then the Townsend Act! Forced us to feed, house, and clothe them! Tea Act was created just to rally us up so that they could be even more controlling without looking bad to other countries! So then when we could stand no more and followed through with The Boston Tea Party giving them and excuse send in more than enough British troops we were forced to let them into our homes even if we could barely support our own family, and we don’t get pay. Also there were restrictions to the time we can go outside! We Bostonians DON”T need Britain breathing down our necks and stealing our liberty to be a country! What we need is to be free! That is why I am going to remain a thru and thru partriot.

Loyalist or Patriot
By: Erin D.

I’m Jennet and I fully agree to be a patriot. The loyalists should not have the power to govern our towns, we can govern ourselves. Patriot can help you deal with the unfair laws by protesting with words not actions. Also we want freedom of other people and slaves.

All of the incidences have overwhelmed us and we had to do something about it. The stamp act, the quartering act and the Townsend act were so unfair, and the all happened around the same time. These movements are not fair because we did not have any say in these acts. The movements have miss- match family in the colonies and have made businesses more complicated.

As we move on there seems to be something going on that the colonist have to protest about. We have no say about this and they make this so unfair for people who against them. I think the British should leave us alone and let us run our own lives. No on should start a war, just mingle to figure out our problems. We should take these statements into consideration.

Loyalist or Patriot? My individual statement.
By: Anne D.

My name is Annabelle Kent and I am a proud patriot of Boston. I am 40 years of age, and my family are the printers.
We print many newspapers on the unjust laws of King George and Parliament. One is on “Taxation without representation.” That means that we do not have any representatives from the colonies in England. The Townshend Act has affected my family especially because we love tea like many others and that was in the act, but we also have to buy lots of paper to print the newspapers on and that was also in the act. I dislike the Quartering Act most strongly for we must have redcoats stay in our houses and we must cook and also clean for the ungrateful lobster backs. We do not have much money and we are supported by my brother-in-law John, but now we even have to pay for another or possibly more than one! My family has made many friends though, through the paper, and our patriotism. Also if there is something that involves liberty, or the Bostonians rebelling, then we’ll print it happily because of our patriotism and get money from the other citizens of which whom are also patriots. I agree with the Boston Tea Party because the King had pushed us, and pushed us and we could not take it any longer! They did the right thing by throwing the tea overboard and sometimes we must take some punishment in order to do what’s right. The tea act had also just pushed us off the deep end, it was like the had taken candy from a baby for them but we wanted to show that they did not completely rule over us and they would not oblige. They want to rule over us no matter how far away we are from the actual King.
I hope you know see how insanely unjust and mad these laws and taxes are and how the King and Parliament are mad. They should be stopped before they cause any more damage and liberty is lost.

Patriot or Loyalist?
By: Nick S.

I am a patriot until the end, and I have many reasons for this statement. But first I would like you to know exactly who I am and what my profession is. My name is Nicholas Jones, I have a wife, Katie, and 2 adorable children, Frederick and William. I am the master apothecary in Boston with William as my apprentice. And, as of several years ago, I have been extremely outraged by Parliaments acts. First and foremost, several years aforementioned, the English government, passed the Townshend Act, that allowed Parliament to tax the colony on things like tea, paper, paint, lead, and glass! To most, this wouldn't seem that severe, but, when you think about it, most businesses barely have enough money to put food on their table and a roof over their heads. RUBBISH, I say, RUBBISH!
Also, about 7 years ago, the British authorized the Quartering Act. This was really adding steam to people's, already burnt, opinions of the dastardly bloody-backs. The Quartering Act was a law, passed by the United Kingdom, that forced all Bostonians, rich or poor, to bestow food and shelter to all English soldiers as thought fit. This, along with the Stamp Act, the Townshend Act, the Tea Act, and the Boston Massacre was just too much for the colonists to handle.
That leads me to my last point of discussion, The Boston Massacre. This horrible event almost drove our town to insanity. First of all, I would just like to tell you that, even though, the redcoats shot and killed 5 colonists, I do think we pushed them too far by throwing snowballs and, really, glass bottles?! For one, the petticoats were not posing any real threat to us. All they were doing was trying to restore order to a mob that broke out. It was horrible that we had lost 5 valuable people, but I think the fault is mostly on our heads. Although all of these occurrences were very grim, I am confidant that, in the future, we will learn from these happenings so they never happen again. I know that my family and I are un-happy about what has happened these past 10 years, and that we have had to make great sacrifices such as food and house but I will do all that is in my power to stop this madness. I think being on the patriots side is physically costly, but it is emotionally satisfying. That is why I, Nicholas Jones, am proud to be a patriot, through and through.
